What is the difference between a skylight, rooflight or roof window?

If you are looking to add value, extra natural lighting or even an aesthetically pleasing addition to your home or commercial space we might have just the thing for you.

For some choosing a skylight is the style for them, for others, a rooflight is favoured and in some cases a roof window is the preferred option, but what are the differences between these 3 glazed products, and which would suit your property?

Now to most of us, all 3 options sound very alike, and in some ways there are similarities, but let’s have a proper look to understand the differences and what might be right for you…

Skylight

Bespoke options, beautiful addition to your property. It warms you up in the winter and can cool you down in the summer. This is often seen as the most popular choice of the 3. It can be effectively fitted on slanted roofs which can be a very attractive look to your room.

Rooflight

Usually fitted on a flat roof, the Rooflight is often a popular choice as it comes in a huge range of styles, shapes and sizes. With sliding and hinged options available a rooflight can end up creating additional space in your home depending on the size and space you choose to fix it to.

Roof Window

This choice requires strong and weather-resistant materials to ensure your home is protected and abides by legal health and safety requirements. Limited in size and shape, this style of window is great for added ventilation.

Generally, it is seen that the Skylight and Rooflight are very similar products. Roof Windows, on the other hand, require different regulations and needs to be certified correctly. All have huge benefits for properties and us at SM Glass Tech are more than happy to assess your space and have a full consultation to help you decide which option would be right for you, your home, your style and your budget.

All 3 add a distinctive addition of natural light to your property which in turn is beneficial for energy savings, with natural heating coming in and the bonus of fresh air should you need, you can control the climate of your room with ease and simplicity. All options look beautiful and add an aesthetically striking characteristic to your home while also adding value to your property. So, whether you are staying for the long haul or eventually selling up, it is very much a win/win situation to have a rooflight, skylight, or roof window installed for your convenience.
